Former Nagaland Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) and Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, YM Yollow Konyak passed away on Wednesday, March 22 in Delhi after a prolonged illness.
Konyak who had been elected twice from 42 Wakching Assembly Constituency under Mon district was sworn in as a cabinet minister under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) government in 2022. That same year along with 20 other NPF MLAs, he joined the NDPP. He had filed his nomination to contest for the 2023 State Assembly Elections as a Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) candidate but later withdrew.
Following his demise, Governor of Nagaland La Ganesan led the state in mourning. Conveying condolences to the bereaved family, the Governor said that Yollow Konyak had served the Government in different capacities and that the State has lost a dedicated public leader. His contributions to the people of Nagaland in various assignments will be remembered for a long time, he added.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio described Yollow Konyak as an energetic and promising leader who had a deep passion for politics ever since his younger days when he served in a number of associations and unions in various capacities, so much so, he took voluntary retirement from Government service to enter politics.
“He was a sincere, hardworking and soft spoken person, and a capable public leader. He cared much for the welfare of his people and his demise is a great loss for the State in general and Konyak tribe in particular,” Rio said while extending condolences to the bereaved family members.
State legislators including Deputy Chief Minister, Y Patton and Nagaland Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament (MP), S Phangnon Konyak took to Twitter to express their condolences for the former minister. Patton tweeted that his leadership and contributions to Nagaland would always be remembered and valued, while Konyak tweeted that Yollow Konyak's demise was a huge loss for the Konyak community and Nagas in general. We have lost a humble leader prematurely, she added.
Meanwhile, Nagaland Advisor for Information & Public Relation, Soil & Water Conservation Imkong L Imchen noted that Yollow Konyak had given his best possible service to the people in his roles as Parliamentary Secretary and as Minister. “A noble soul gone too early,” Imchen said.
The Eastern Nagaland Legislators’ Union remembered the former minister as a gentle natured and kind-hearted dynamic leader who always worked for the welfare of the society passionately and executed his assignments diligently. “A humble person, dedicated and a fearless man of great vision who stands and speaks for truth, the passing away of YM Yollow was a big loss for the Konyak community in particular and Nagas in general,” it said in a condolence message to his wife Minching Konyak and all the bereaved family members.
Among others, Leader of NPF Legislature Party, Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu, Advisor, Labour, Employment & Skill Development and Excise Moatoshi Longkumer, and Advisor for geology & Mining, DUDA W Chingang Konyak expressed grief at the passing of their colleague and friend. The void created by him will be felt hard by all and would be difficult to fill, they said in separate messages received here today.
