Dimapur, March 27 (MExN): Former principal of Salesian College Dimapur, Dr Jose Kuruvachira is coordinator of the newly launched on-line degree programme in Philosophy from the Philosophy faculty at the Pontifical Salesian University (UPS) Rome.
A press note issued by C.M Paul, stated that this first ever one year on-line Master of Philosophy programme in collaboration with Lateran University Rome and Accademia di Scienze Umane e Sociali (ASUS) is based in Rome. The degree programme called Mediazione Culturale e Religiosa (Cultural and Religious Mediation) started on March 18, 2011 with 25 candidates.  While Prof Gaspare Mura of Lateran University Rome is director of the programme, Prof. Teresa Doni and Prof Jose Kuruvachira of UPS Rome are coordinators.
The 60 credit (European Union requirement) course prepares professionals to meet the cultural and religious challenges of today’s globalised society. Several professors of UPS and other Roman Universities and elsewhere are involved in teaching and preparing course material,” says Dr Kuruvachira. Besides some basic contact lessons once a month on weekends, the entire course will depend on personal study with course materials supplied on-line. Though the medium of instruction now is Italian, the course will be available in other major European languages. The not-for-profit course fees cost about Euro 2,500 (INR 1,50,000) and is payable in three easy quarterly installments.
Prof. Kuruvachira (52 years) who started teaching philosophy at UPS Rome from October 2010 was promoted to aggiunto, taking into consideration his various publications and outstanding academic background.
Prof. Kuruvachira is specialized in Philosophy of Religion and History of Religions with emphasis on Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam. Author of 14 books (10 authored and 4 edited), Prof Kuruvachira who did his PhD in Philosophy from the Gregorian University, Rome (2002) and over 70 researched articles on philosophy, religious issues and cultures. Dr Kuruvachira contributed as Member of the Philosophy Syllabus Formation Committee for Bachelor of Philosophy of the Nagaland University (2003-2004).
He was Expert Committee Member for Curriculum formation for Bachelor and Master of philosophy (B.A. & M.A.) of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), 2008 and
2009 respectively.
