Fortis Hospital successfully treats Nagaland man with Robotic Surgery

KOHIMA, MARCH 20 (MExN): A 65-year-old male patient from Nagaland recently underwent a successful robotic-assisted gallbladder removal surgery at Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta Road in Bengaluru. The procedure, led by Dr Sreedhara V, Director of GI, Minimal Access & Bariatric Surgery at Fortis, showcases the hospital's commitment to advanced, precision-based surgical techniques.

The patient had been experiencing severe upper abdominal pain for two weeks and had a history of hypertension. He had been suffering from gallstones for over four months. His condition, diagnosed as Acute Calculous Cholecystitis (ACC), required immediate medical attention. ACC is a condition in which a gallstone blocks the cystic duct, leading to gallbladder inflammation, a press release issued by Fortis Hospital stated.

Robotic-assisted gallbladder removal, a relatively rare procedure in India, was performed in less than 25 minutes with minimal discomfort for the patient. This technique is preferred over conventional surgery due to its advantages, including smaller incisions, reduced post-operative pain, faster recovery, and greater precision.

Dr Sreedhara V explained that robotic surgery is an effective minimally invasive alternative to traditional methods. "It reduces the risks associated with anesthesia and surgery while ensuring a quicker return to normal life. If left untreated, ACC can lead to severe complications, including recurrent gallstone formation, inflammation, or infection of the gallbladder, bile ducts, or pancreas," he said.

The patient was discharged just one day after the surgery, experiencing a quicker recovery compared to traditional surgical methods. Akshay Oleti, Business Head of Fortis Hospitals Bengaluru, emphasized the hospital's dedication to adopting cutting-edge medical technology for improved patient outcomes.

Robotic-assisted gallbladder removal remains an uncommon procedure in India, with fewer than 100 surgeons regularly performing it across the country.
