Forum to ask govt to create “disability cell”

Mokokchung, May 29 (MExN): A one day workshop on disabilities organised by the Forum for Special People, a cell under the Care and Support Society was conducted on May 28 at Longkumer Kilem, Mokokchung Town.
Care and Support Society Mokokchung, Managing Director, Imchawati Kichu in a press note stated that during the end of the workshop the forum decided to undertake the following resolutions: To ask the State government to create a “disability cell” under the charge of a Commissioner and Secretary; To ask the Ao Baptist Arogo Mongdang to encourage local Churches to undertake programmes for the rehabilitation of people with disabilities; To organise vocational training for people with disabilities in the district; To undertake an awareness programme for the prevention of disabilities; To organise an educational workshop on disabilities for parents and To encourage the general public to patronise the services of people with disabilities who are trained/adept in vocational skills/crafts.
Earlier, Arasenla, ADC MKG graced the occasion and stressed the importance of parents in rehabilitating people with disabilities. She highlighted on the need to erase social stigma against people with disabilities by spreading awareness among the general public. She also encouraged the Forum to put forth need-based proposals to the Government.
Rev. Ponen, Pastor MTBA, spoke on the issue from the biblical perspective and assured the support and concern of the church towards people with disabilities. T Imkong Longkumer, District Welfare Officer Mokokchung, explained the various kinds of facilities and schemes extended by the Government to people with disabilities. Chubainla IED Coordinator SSA, gave an overview of the steps taken by the Government towards incorporating inclusive education for people with disabilities in government educational institutions and encouraged parents with children having disabilities to take advantage of it. Thomas of Guardian Angel Dimapur, an expert on disabilities, explained the technicalities of the Rights of disabled people, and the prevention, care and treatment for disabilities.
Around 70 participants including people with disabilities and parents attended the workshop. Representatives from the district administration, the church, district child protection society and NGOs attended the workshop.
