Mokokchung, November 15 (MExN): A tragic bus accident early this morning left four people dead on the spot and number of people injured in what can be termed as one of the worst accident cases in Mokokchung. The accident happened barely eight kilometers away from Mokokchung town. A government official disclosed that the bus first hit a small hillock and it rolled down some two hundred feet downhill, killing four on the spot.
It is learnt that the ‘Network Travels’ -  bearing No As-03B- 0071 - night bus traveling from Dimapur to Tuensang was traveling at a high speed when the accident occurred. A victim admitted at Civil Hospital Mokokchung, disclosed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. The driver identified as Ram Kumar Ratan (a Nepali) is one among the deceased.
The Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital (IMDH) was overwhelmed with the number of patients who were brought to the hospital for medical help. A doctor at the IMDH disclosed that three victims are in “serious condition” while one victim is under “critical condition”.
However, the exact number of passengers inside the bus cannot be ascertained. While Police Station-I officials said that the number of passengers was about fifty, the Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, Lithrongla G Chishi (who said that the district administration took stock of the situation from early morning, 4 O’clock) said that the number of passengers in the bus was forty two.
Dr Medem of IMDH disclosed that fifteen people were admitted at the hospital. Three are in serious condition, while one is in ‘critical’ condition. The doctor disclosed that the death toll might go up, since given the critical condition of one patient admitted at the hospital.
Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung Lithorngla G Chishi said that the district administration and the police have taken stock of the situation. She expressed gratitude to the Ao Senden (Ao Hoho) for providing the coffins, and the Chuchuyimpang villagers for providing the traditional shawls.
She disclosed that the administration is providing bed sheets for the deceased, and also arranging the ambulances for those who were referred to other hospitals.

IMDH overwhelmed:
In cases of accidents, blood loss remains a threat, and want of blood donors remain scarce. This time round, thanks to the Mokokchung District Voluntary Blood Donors Association (MDVBDA) the need for blood for the critically injured people was acquired free of cost.
The MDVBDA formed in the month of June 2011 mobilized the ‘voluntary blood donors’ and also the Lija Lijem Ward, and those who needed blood for emergency cases were provided free of cost. Former Ao Kaketshir Mungdang (AKM) vice president, Aolong Imchen also came forward and donated a unit of blood for a critically injured victim. The Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem (MTLT) officials and the District Youth Congress members also came forward and donated free blood. It was a rare case where the attendants of accident victims do not have to search for blood donors. There were plenty, and the news for voluntary blood donors were everywhere in the town. Some even posted in the popular social networking site, and came voluntarily. Fortunately or unfortunately, there were only some who needed blood at today’s accident.
“This is something which has never happened before, and we are very much overwhelmed. We are very happy,” said Dr Medem, Senior surgeon of the Hospital.
A father of a ‘critically injured’ victim expressed deep gratitude to the MDVBDA, the Mokokchung Lanur Telongjem and also the District Youth Congress for coming forward and donating blood ‘without being asked’. MDVBDA also expressed deep gratitude to the volunteers who came forward to donate blood with the understanding ‘donate blood, save a live’.
