Free surgery camp for cleft lip & cleft palate patients

Kohima: Mission Nagaland, 19th phase under Smile Train Shija Cleft Project will be organizing a three days free surgery camp for cleft lip and cleft palate patients at Oking Hospital & Research Clinic (P) Ltd., Kohima from February 20 to 22.

The camp is being organized as a joint initiative between Shija Hospitals, Imphal and Oking Hospital & Research Institute (P) Ltd., Kohima. Dr. Kh. Palin, MCh (Plastic surgery), HOD, Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Shija Hospitals and Research Institute Pvt. Ltd., Imphal will be conducting the operation procedures.

Dr. Vikethonyü Kesiezie, Managing Director, Oking hospital said the project is an endeavor towards rendering new smiles, new hopes to cleft lip and palate patients living in Nagaland. A cleft is a separation or gap in the body structure. Two major types of oral – facial clefts are cleft lip and cleft palate.He also said research reveals that one in every 600 to 800 live birth is born with cleft. With a population of around 19, 81,000, it is estimated that about 3,300 cleft patients are still hiding in Nagaland.

Till date, 189 cleft patients from Nagaland have availed of free corrective surgical treatment under this project. The services being offered under this project include free medicine, treatment and accommodation at Oking Hospital along with free gifts and backpacks with information regarding Smile Train for every operated patient, he maintained.

Dr. Vikethonyü Kesiezie appreciates the role of media for extending cooperation and support in disseminating the information to the people of Nagas. He requested all the social, political and church leaders to support the cause.
