DDADU to give free ride to commuters today

In what would be a pleasant surprise for commuters, the Dimapur District Autorickshaw Drivers’ Union (DDADU) will be giving free rides on December 21. The benevolent gesture will remain effective for 4 hours from 8 am till 12 noon within the municipal area.

As many as 50 autorickshaw drivers have volunteered, who will park their three-wheelers in 9 designated spots for commuters to avail the service. According to DDADU president, I. Vitoshe Sema, the act is in one way a gesture to live up to the spirit of Christmas and also to the DDADU’s ‘Service to the Public’ motto.

Based on ‘first come, first serve’ concept, commuters can avail the free rides at 9 locations – Clock Tower, District Hospital, Nikos Hospital, MH Hospital, Faith Hospital, East Police Station, DC’s office, Belho Nursing Home (Walford) and at the New Flyover junction where MP Road meets NL Road.

Asked how commuters can distinguish the special autorickshaws lined up for the service, one of the volunteer drivers replied that the autorickshaws will have stickers with the message, “Free Town Trip. Service to Public.” It was added that the service will apply to commuters intending to travel to any location within town.

At least 4-6 such autorickshaws will be parked in each of the 9 designated locations. In the event of a rush, as in more than one commuter vying for the free ride, the driver said that lottery will be drawn. The commuter picking the lucky number will get the opportunity, he added.

DDADU president said that the autorickshaw drivers have been mooting to organise such an event for quite some time, while adding, “We are planning to turn this into an annual affair.”
