Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK), Kohima today organized “Freedom March” (Tiranga Yatra) on historic WWII– (IB) Indo-Burma (Myanmar) Highway (now NH-2) here as part of celebration of India’s 70 years of Independence. Around 600 youth from Phesama village, Kigwema village, students of Japfü Christian College and volunteers from Kohima joined the march, which was flagged off by MLA Vikho-o Yhoshu.

Addressing the gathering at Kimipfuphe ground, Kigwema, MLA Yhoshu called upon the youth to rededicate themselves in the service of the nation

Jackie Ruivah, state director NYKS Nagaland said the youth were gathered today to celebrate the attainment of 70 years of Independence from the Colonial British rule.

She added that NYK is organizing the Tiranga Yatra across the country from the eve of Independence Day to August 24 with the initiative of various Central Ministries with a view to enhance the spirit of nationalism, to generate enthusiasm and infuse patriotism among the youth and people in general.

“The objective of Tiranga Yatra is for spreading social harmony and unity,” she said. Stating that India has multiplicity of language and dialects, she said, “India is impressed by her diversities, ethnic cultural, linguistic, regional, religious and cross cutting ties between its people. The age old value system of love, tolerance, communal harmony, peace and non-violence has to be promoted and accelerated among the youth of the present society.”

She was optimistic that the participants of today’s march will be a messenger of love, peace and social harmony and work for strengthening communal harmony, national unity and development of the country.

“We should work for social harmony and unity of the country,” said John Makhabo, District Youth Coordinator, NYK Kohima. Makhabo informed that similar Tiranga Yatra is also being conducted in Dimapur and Zunheboto. The occasion also witnessed distribution of sports materials.
