Fresh twist to DMC power struggle

DIMAPUR, JUNE 11 (MExN): Lending a fresh twist to the tale of DMC power struggle, a recommendation for the removal of the intending Chairperson, Y. Vikheho has been submitted to the Government through the Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur.  The recommendation signed by the Chairperson DMC, Tovihoto Ayemi, was made on the grounds that the council member had remained absent from three consecutive board meetings of the council without any known reason or intimidation to the council.

The recommendation stated that a member was elected to help the civic bodies perform its duty in day to day basis and work for the general public but the absenteeism of the said member could be concluded that he had “neither the intention of serving the people nor keep the high principle of service towards the office”.

Based on the aforementioned reason, the recommendation was made to the government to remove Vikheho from the Council under Section 28 (e) of the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 and fill the post of the member through fresh election according to Section 29 (2) of the same. A copy of the DMC board meeting details containing the dates of the meetings and signatures of members present was enclosed along with the letter addressed to the Deputy Commissioner.

On being contacted, the Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur, Abhijit Sinha confirmed that he had received the recommendation but said that he would have to investigate it further before taking any decision.

It maybe mentioned that the Chairperson of DMC, Tovihoto has submitted his resignation following the representation for no-confidence motion passed by Vikheho’s supporters.

A stipulated period of fifteen days had been given for the election of the Chairperson against the vacant post arising out of Tovihoto’s resignation during which he can withdraw his resignation.

This latest development is likely to further delay the election of the DMC Chairperson earlier scheduled to be held on June 12, inflicting more suspense into the power struggle for the Dimapur Municipal Council.
