Dimapur, March 20 (MExN): In an attempt to enhance the good relations between the people living in the Assam-Nagaland border areas, Gabroo Festival-2016 is being celebrated at the foot hills located at Gabroo in the adjoining areas of Jorhat and Mokokchung district.
According to a press release, the three day event which kicked off on March 18 with exchanges of pleasantries amongst the people from the 6 surroundings Naga villages and the 9 Assamese villages followed by “Gabroo Peace Flag” hoisting. In the afternoon, Friendly Volley ball league match was held. The final match played on Saturday where Assam team, Sotai, won beating Tsuremmen village from Nagaland.
Gabroo is a spot filled with scenic natural beauty and considered a renowned heritage site situated near Assam – Nagaland border. Apart from historic identity of Ahom rule, the hear-say about Gabroo and the mighty Bhramaputra River is an attraction for intellectuals towards revealing the concealed mystery for the posterity.
The goal of celebrating this festival is to interchange the culture and literature between the people of Assam and Nagaland, the release stated. The festival also aims to uplift the peace and prosperity among the people living in this region, it added.
The celebration covering public from both hills and plains is expected to enhance the mission of the Border Peace Coordination Committee (Assam-Nagaland), BPCC (A-N), as the BPCC (A-N) is of the opinion that sports and cultural assimilations of the bordering people shall be effective ways of peace coordination.
The festival is organized by the Gabroo Tourism Development Committee in collaboration with the Border Peace Coordination Committee (Assam-Nagaland), the release informed. The organizers have named the main meeting hall in honor of late Ngangshikaba Aier (popularly known as J.N. Aier), father of Nagaland Parliamentary Secretary (Agriculture & Chairman NSAMB) and Alongtaki MLA, Dr. Benjongliba, who died recently. Today, during the final days celebration, a close interaction session was initiated where public from the surrounding areas both from the Hills and plains participated and deliberated on continuance of such activities in future and to uphold the traditional age old good relations amongst the people.
Assam Parliamentary Secretary (Power) and Mariani MLA, Rupjyoti Kurmi, President of BPCC(A-N) B. P. Bora alongwith Executive members, Village Council Chairmen of Akumen, Tsuremmen, Saringyim and Nokpu (Assiring) and a host of public leaders partook in this session, the release stated.
