Gandhiji’s Fasting And The Fasting These Days

•-Mahatma Gandhi resorted to fasting  as a matter of self purification and   to uphold the cause of truth.  He fasted when there was communal blood shed to drive home the message of peace and harmony.
Even during the Quit India Movement, Gandhiji  did not go on fasting demanding that the British should leave India.  In other words, he did not use the concept and method of fasting to achieve political ends or settle political scores.
Unfortunately,  some people  seem to be resorting to fasting  these days  for all types of causes  and perhaps , even to get media publicity and political mileage. Many so called Swamijis, Babas and Godmen  apart from politicians seem to be giving new meaning  for fasting  and their fasting is inevitably accompanied by huge preparatory work  which include installation of air conditioners and coolers in the  specially  constructed premises  and huge collection of funds. Most of these fasts do not last for more than four  to five  days  and appears to be becoming a national pastime.
Gandhians really feel sad at such turn of events and  are  dismayed that the power of fasting that was demonstrated by  Mahatma Gandhi with great nobility and wisdom are  now  being misused by  politicians and so called Godmen.
