The Aizawl bench of Gauhati High Court has rejected a plea by nominated members of Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) to participate in the floor test. The high court dismissed the case in a judgment order on October 19.
In July 2017, District Council and Minority Affairs department of the Mizoram Government, had by notification, informed the LADC secretary that nominated members are not allowed to cast their votes in floor test of the council.
Reacting to the order, 3 nominated members of LADC approached the Gauhati High court challenging the legal validity of the order. The high court on Friday rejected the plea.
Meanwhile, the high court has fixed next hearing on the case of five members who quit Congress Legislature Party, on November 6.
There are 25 elected members in the LADC of which 16 are Congress members supported by one independent candidate. 4 of the Congress members and an independent candidate have recently withdrawn from Congress Legislature Party and formed United Legislature Party with Mizo Nation Front (MNF), which has 8 members in 25 member council. The United Legislature Party is attempting to oust Congress Legislature Party headed by T Zakunga.
