Gender statistics in Nagaland:Crime against women on rise

In the recent years, crime against women has been on the rise in the state, the annual administrative report 2018-19 of Nagaland’s economics & statistics department informed.
According to the report, there has been gradual increase in overall crime figures with major increase in rape, kidnapping & abduction, murder and outraging of modesty. During 2015, there were 35 cases of rape, it stated.


The department for the first time has taken up the responsibility for the collection and dissemination of data on gender.


It focuses on eight major areas of women’s status in Nagaland which includes population, health, social obstacles in women’s empowerment, leadership, women participation in economy, labour force, employment, literacy and education.


The population of Nagaland as per 2011 census is 19, 78, 502 lakh consisting of 9, 53, 853 lakh female which accounts for 48.21% of the total population. This means there are 931 female per 1000 males.


As per the report, during 2014 the female Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) was 0.15 as compared with the male IMR of 0.19 and the overall IMR was 0.17.
IMR has reduced substantially from 1.58 in 2011 to 0.17 in 2014, indicating improvement in health mechanism for infants. Nagaland has lower IMR as compared with the national IMR.


As per 2011 census, literacy rate in Nagaland stood at 79.55% as compared to 66.60 % during 2001 census which is an increase of 19.44%.


The female literacy rate has increased from 61.50% during 2001 to 76.11% during 2011.


Census 2011 shows that the work force participation rate for females is 44.7% against 53.4% for males. Rural sector has a better female workforce participation rate of 52.3% compared to urban sector which has only 25.9%. It is observed that there is a huge gap in rural and urban females’ workforce participation.


The report stated that female participation (voters) in state general elections has increased from 80.51% during the 2nd general election in 1969 to 91.33% during the 12th general election in 2013.
