Ghokuto & Viheto villages are cut off due to landslide

Dimapur, June 27 (MExN): The lifeline road of Ghokuto and Viheto villages has been badly damaged due to landslides that occurred along the 8 kilometer hilly road on June 24 and 25. Incessant rain triggered the landslide on the only road that connect the two villages to EAC headquarter Nihokhu.

In a statement, G. Shikavi Zhimo, head GB of Ghokuto stated that the road have been severely effected in several places. In some places the roads have been blocked with mud that slide down from above the road while in some places the road have sunken down several meters, making it impossible for vehicles to ply on the road. The village chief added that the road has been extensively damaged due to lack of proper drainage along the road.

He also added that the people of two villages are facing immense hardship, especially students and sick people, as they have to trek for hours to reach Nihokhu.

He stated that with the onset of summer vacation and Tuluni festival, students going home from hostels will face difficulties getting to the villages and also villagers would have difficulties in travelling to town for shopping for the festival unless the road is repaired at the earliest.

The press statement also maintained that the villages have been maintaining the road on their own by deploying villagers and funds managed by the village council. The road was constructed in 2012 under PMGSY.
