GHS Zhadima leads plastic-free pledge

Kohima, June 6 (MExN): Commemorating World Environment Day on June 5, Field Management Unit (FMU) - Nagaland Forest Management Project (NFMP) Chiephobozou Range and FNGO Nagaland Association for Adventure Mountaineering and Education (NAAME) celebrated the event at Government High School, Zhadima village in collaboration with Nagaland State Biodiversity Board (NSBB).

The event garnered more than 100 participants comprising students from Standard 5 to 10, staff and faculty, Self-Help Group members and well-wishers. The event flagged off with a pledge to minimise plastic pollution in the environment and to encourage use of eco-friendly alternatives.

Savinuo Kikhi, RFO Chiephobozou, highlighted the significance of observing the day with the students community to address the challenge of addressing plastic pollution at personal capacities leading to larger efforts to mitigate the global issue of plastic waste.

Emphasizing on remedial steps to tackle the challenge, Kikhi, encouraged the students to inculcate habits such as, “Refuse and avoid single use plastic bottles, Say No to One time use plastics, Say No to plastic straws and spoons, Smart waste management, Innovative use of plastic waste for different purposes and to follow the principles of 4 R’s”.

Akho Phira, Team Leader FNGO NAAME, highlighted the roles and functioning of United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) in leading global efforts towards environment conservation and protection. Phira also briefed the audience about the ongoing Nagaland Forest Project Management (NFMP) funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) which is being implemented by the Forest Department, GoN.

Highlights of the event saw the participation of 18 students in the Open Extempore Competition with the theme “End Plastic Pollution”. The competition witnessed sharing on the negative impacts of plastic pollution on the environment coupled with recommendations and ideas to address the challenge.

Kekhriengulie, Headmaster (GHSZ) applauded the organizing partners for observing such important events with the school students and authority to collectively address the challenge of the environmental crisis.

Neitho, Technical Executive from NSSB shared on the relationship of environment and biodiversity and stressed on a harmonious coexistence for a healthy world.

The event culminated with a cleanliness and plantation drive around the school campus through a joint effort of the students, school authority and members from Self-Help Groups (SHGs).

Prizes and certificates were awarded to the winners and all participants of the extempore speech competition.
