Giants: Huthuka Sumi's folktale-inspired debut novel

Dimapur, July 10 (MExN): HarperCollins India announced the upcoming release of Giants, the debut novel by Huthuka Sumi.

In a statement, the author described the book as a culmination of childhood folktales reimagined through the influences of literary greats like Tolkien, Toni Morrison, Khaled Hosseini, Orhan Pamuk, Ayako Miura, and biblical narratives.

“The stories I grew up with became clothed with the flesh of self-awareness, and before I knew it they insisted that they be told. Not as I’d heard them, but as I lived them,” Sumi stated.

Aparna Kapur, Senior Consultant Editor – HarperCollins observed that Huthuka's writing is wholly original. Strolling through the rich emotional landscapes of his characters, he writes with tenderness about self-doubt, conflict, friendship and loss.

“But, to me, the magic of Giants lies in the clear-eyed and open-hearted descriptions of the everyday—lazy afternoons, welcoming rivers, petty arguments, farming songs, cosy kitchens and, of course, all the irresistible food,” Kapur said.

“We are delighted to publish Huthuka Sumi’s brilliant novel, Giants. The title couldn’t have been more apt for a truly giant debut!” Tina Narang, Executive Publisher – HarperCollins added.

“Giants” by Huthuka Sumi follows Kato, a young boy content with his doting mother, loyal friend, and beloved stories—yet longing to speak like everyone else. When Kene, a mythical giant, seeks him out as a storyteller, Kato doubts his own voice. Over a transformative year, he discovers the true power of storytelling as his world and relationships shift forever. Blending magic realism and profound emotional insight, this lyrical debut explores identity, silence, and the stories that shape us.
