The 2nd Dorians Society Spell Bee Competition 2023 witnessed an all-girls’ podium finish. The winners were Likyaro Patton (Class 8) of Hope Academy, Shahnaz Ali (Class 9) of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School and Kowsara Begum of Liz Woodland School (Class 8).
Likyaro took the top prize, finishing at the top among more than 50 spellers from 27 schools. Shahnaz finished second and Kowsara was third. They won cash prizes of Rs 10,000, Rs 5000 and Rs 3000, respectively, along with certificates.
The inter-school spelling competition for class 7-9 was open to schools from Dimapur, Niuland and Chümoukedima and was held at the Kingdom Culture Church hall, Dimapur. The spellers were from 27 schools, including three government schools, with each of the competing school sending two competitors.
The competition was presided over by two judges and two pronouncers. Each speller was given 2 minutes to spell words from the English dictionary with the option to request the word meaning, part of speech, etymology and an example of its usage/function in a sentence.
According to the Dorians Society, the competition was organised with the primary objective of holding the spelling contest has been to promote healthy competition among students, while helping them improve their spelling prowess and enhancing vocabulary, besides serving as a launch pad to go on to compete in bigger stages.
The Dorians Society was founded in 1997 with a commitment to fostering positive change within the community. While initially concentrating on sports, the society has diversified its activities to encompass various social initiatives, including the Spell Bee Competition.
