Global IDD Prevention Day observed

Zunheboto, October 30 (MExN): District Health Society, Zunheboto observed Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) Prevention Day at Nito Theological College, Zunheboto on October 27.

Dr. G. Hokishe Sema, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Zunheboto, who was the resource person, highlighted the importance of iodised salt. He pointed out that iodine is essential for the normal growth, development and functioning of both the brain and body. A pregnant woman who is deficient in iodine is likely to produce an abnormal child, he added, according to a press release from Shekho Sophie, District Media Officer, CMO office, Zunheboto.  

Dr. Hokishe also emphasised that shopkeepers should stock and sell only iodised salt, while stating that sale of non iodised salt is banned under the provision of PFA Act 1954. He also shared about the responsibilities of every citizen to purchase and consume iodised salt only. He noted that Iodine Deficiency Disorders occur in almost all the states and Union Territories of India. The CMO also demonstrated how to test iodine content in salt.  

Free IEC materials were distributed during the programme, which was attended by Nito Theological College (NTC) staffs, students and medical fraternity. Niholi Shohe, Academic Dean, NTC chaired the programme.
