Kohima, June 22 (MExN): The Department of Tourism in collaboration with the Land Resources Department and Nagaland Bee and Honey Mission (NBHM) held a tree plantation drive at Naga Heritage Village, Kisama on June 22 under the theme ‘Go Green’.
The plantation drive was led by Secretary for Tourism T Mhabemo Yanthan as one of his first action plans after taking charge over Tourism Department, stated a press release received here.
The Secretary (Tourism) and Team Leader (NBHM) spoke on conserving of natural resources in view of the decline of biodiversity which has disturbed or altered the habitat and food chain. Citing the present scenario of Nagaland, he stated that the environmental impact caused by the rampant slash and burn of forest cover for agriculture and loggings is alarming.
On the account of plantation drive, he also spoke on the role & importance of bees and beekeeping in the environment. “Bees are essential components of almost all of the world’s terrestrial ecosystems for reproduction and survival of our flora and fauna; more than one-third of the world crop production is dependent on bees–pollinating service,” he stated.
Mhabemo also noted that out of 90% of food crops that feed the world population, 70% are pollinated by honeybees. To save bees and the ecosystem as a whole, he encouraged planting bee friendly flowers in public gardens, community space, meadow and roadsides.
