Godhula’s Church to attain 125 yrs

Dimapur, June 13 (MExN): Assam Valley Baptist Mission HQ Nakachari: The Namsissu Baptist Church located near Teok in Jorhat District which was founded by Late Godhula Brown in 1889 will be observing Quasqui Centenary by 2014.
A press note issued by Temsu Wathi Ao, District Informatics Officer (NIC) Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Mokokchung & President, Assam Valley Baptist Mission informed that a goodwill visit to Namsissu Baptist Church by the Assam Valley Baptist Mission members met the members and took stock of their preparation for the quasqui centenary celebration.
It has been observed that although Namsissu is one of the oldest Churches in Assam, they lag behind in Church infrastructure, poor maintenance of cemetery ground, lack of documentation of church records etc. It is sad to note that the Church had never organized and celebrated its jubilees like Silver, Golden, Platinum and Centenary in the past. It was resolved in the meeting to organise another meeting involving officials from Sibsagar Association to chalk out plan for constituting quasqui centenary organizing committee. Namsissu Baptist Church is an affiliated church under Sibsagar Association and constituent member church under Assam Valley Baptist Mission.
On behalf of the Namsissu Baptist Church, the Assam Valley Baptist Mission appeal to individuals, churches and associations to kindly extend logistics for uplifting this church and help celebrating the 125 years event meaningfully. Also if anything that is deemed to be related to the life of Godhula, such information may kindly be communicated to the organiser.

Remembering a pioneer of the gospel

Late Godhula Brown, a trusted lieutenant of Dr E.W. Clark was the path finder for spreading the gospel to the Naga Hills during late 1860s from Sibsagar in Assam. Late Godhula is a household name in most of the churches in Mokokchung district specifically Molungkimong where the first seed of gospel was sown and Church established in the late 1870s. Later Dr E.W. Clark with the active assistance rendered by Godhula and their Naga Mission team took control and spread the gospel throughout the length and breath of Naga Hills. Later this led to the foundation of the Ao Baptist Arogo Mungdang (ABAM).
It is said that Late Godhula Brown (original name Gendhela Barua) who was an ardent Hindu converted into Christianity was not liked by many from his native at that point of time and therefore he had chosen to settle down at Namsissu area after his retirement from Naga Mission. He had toiled hard by spreading the Gospel in this new location and finally the Namsissu Church got started in the year 1889. Today the church is blessed with 67 families.
Godhula died at Namsissu. In honour of this noble man Molungkimong church has erected an epitaph at Namsissu near Teok in Jorhat district.
