The Assam Rifles busted a huge consignment of contrabands during a “surprise raid” at a reportedly private godown located below Patkai Christian College, Seithekema C, Chümoukedima on April 27. As per official sources, the seized contrabands contained areca nuts, poppy seeds and black pepper.
This version was however contested by a person at the site. According to him, he was present at the place when the AR raided the godown at around 9:00 pm on Thursday night. He alleged that the raid was conducted without acquiring legal warrant.
About the alleged illicit goods, he claimed that they were locally harvested and that there was nothing illegal about it. Moreover, he claimed that all the articles in question were to be exported with proper papers and documents, including GST filing. “Therefore this is a blatant form of harassment meted out to the public,” he held.
As per his estimate, the items were worth approximately Rs 80 lakhs, including 1500 bags of areca nuts and 1000 kilograms of black pepper. The figures could not be independently verified by The Morung Express as of the time of filing this report.
Dimapur police and officials from the CGST Commissionerate, Dimapur, were also present at the site on Friday. However, the Dimapur police was yet to put out an official statement regarding the incident. The Assam Rifles also did not issue any official statement about the raid.
