Government in process of accrediting polytechnics

Kohima | April 10 : With a view to enhancing the quality and standard of Technical Education in Nagaland, the department of technical education has initiated the process of accrediting the polytechnics by the NBA for which consultants from EQUATE who have vast experience in technical education projects have been roped in for preparing DPR, conducting training and guiding the polytechnics in all related matters for NBA accreditation.
The state has now three technical institutes- Khelhoshe Polytechnic Atoizu in Zunheboto district, Government Polytechnic Kohima and Institute for Communication & Information Technology at Mokokchung, which are offering three year engineering diploma programmes in civil, electrical and electronics, mechanical, automobile, computer, electronics and communications, computer applications, modern office practice and an advanced diploma programme in apparel production.
The state is burdened by having to send and sustain numerous numbers of students outside the state for pursuing various technical studies. Besides, heavy expenditures are frequently incurred by the students even for their to and fro journey.
This was stated in the annual administrative report of the state’s directorate of technical education.
Meanwhile, five more new polytechnics have been sanctioned by MHRD in five districts of Dimapur, Mon, Tuensang , Phek and Wokha. DPRs for all have been prepared in consultation with EQUATE and inspection teams have already finalized sites after visiting many proposed sites in all the five districts.
The state government is now in the process of acquiring the land for setting up the institutes after which civil works will begin, the report said.
Similarly, the report said, the existing Polytechnics are undergoing a process of continuous upgradation through infrastructural development works like construction of fencing, rainwater harvesting, playgrounds, hostels etc.
The department al officials have also visited technical institute of repute in other states to get firsthand knowledge about the method and style of functioning of such quality technical institutions.
Further, the department has initiated consultation with various organizations/companies within the state like M/S Zynorique, Kohima, VASCON, etc. for placement of diploma pass outs from polytechnics.
