DIMAPUR, APRIL 26 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee has urged the Governor of Nagaland to immediately intervene in the ‘unconstitutional behaviour’ of Dr Shürhozelie, NPF President who is also Minister of Planning and Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio “for losing faith in the electoral system under the Election Commission of India while running the affairs of the State.”
NPCC President Hokheto Sumi today said Rio and Shürhozelie should be immediately removed from their respective offices on moral grounds citing that they have failed to uphold the oath of allegiance under the Constitution of India while discharging their official duties.
“If Dr Shürhozelie is fully aware of the developmental activities in the State, the NPCC wants him to go out of Kohima district and see whether other districts are also covered at par with each other in developmental works,” he said. Stating that the NPF led DAN coalition is an NDA breed, Hokheto appealed to the people that Nagaland being a Christian State, one should be prepared to face any eventuality against the NPF led DAN Government once they implement BJP President Rajnath Singh’s agenda to enact anti-conversion laws as appealed to all BJP ruled states.
Noting surprise, the NPCC said Shürhozelie’s statement terming the present election system to be a borrowed practice from India and not akin to Naga culture is a direct threat to Parliamentary system of Government. “Dr Shürhozelie has forgotten that he has become a Minister in the State by participating as an NPF candidate in the last General Assembly Election 2003 under the Constitution of India. He is trying to confuse the people that we should go for traditional system of selecting leaders and not election.”
If such is the suggestion of Dr Shürhozelie, the Congress said, he should approach the Election Commission of India for electoral reforms and till such time he should refrain from contesting in any election.
Hokheto further said it was more astonishing to note that Neiphiu Rio, Chief Minister of Nagaland, while supporting Dr. Shürhozelie’s suggestions that “Nagas elected their leaders through selection by people”, had started seeking financial assistance from the public for the next general election, citing the examples of advanced countries where people support politicians even financially during the election.
“After accumulating wealth disproportionate to his income as Chief Minister, N. Rio has shown his greed for money has no end by requesting people to financially help their candidates during election times and allow them to work for people’s welfare once elected.”
Questioning Dr Shürhozelie’s sincerity towards solving the Naga political issue, the NPCC said it is yet to see the sincerity of “NPF giving its efforts into the issue when they talk of solution.”
On the developmental front, the Congress said the NPF leaders “are publicizing those works initiated by Congress Party being completed during their time.”
