Governor calls on new NSCPCR chairperson to promote ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ scheme

Kohima, June 20 (MExN): The Governor of Nagaland, PB Acharya has congratulated Awan Konyak on being appointed as chairperson of Nagaland State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NSCPCR).

In a message addressed to the NSCPCR chairperson, Acharya stated children have the right to survive, to be safe, to belong, to be heard, to receive adequate care and to grow up in a protective environment and “we should make sure that schools and communities protect all children and prevent child maltreatment.”

Schools and communities can protect girls and boys from violations such as abuse, sexual exploitation, trafficking and work in hazardous conditions, as well as harmful practices, including child marriage, he maintained.

The Governor noted that data shows rampant growth in child abuse and child rights violation cases in Northeast India. Child trafficking for labour & sexual exploitation and distressed migration of young boys and girls should be considered prioritized issues for potential intervention, he added.

Acharya further called on Awan to participate and promote the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ (save daughter, educate daughter) scheme, which aims to save and empower girl child all over the nation.

He meanwhile opined that the strength of the chain lies in the weakest link and in the education field government schools are the weakest link. “We must ensure that the students get all facilities especially Mid Day Meal, free books, uniform, etc,” he stated.

The Governor hoped that under the leadership of Awan Konyak, Nagaland State Commission for Protection of Child Rights will make all out efforts to protect the rights of children in the State.
