Dimapur, October 29 (MExN): Nagaland Governor PB Acharya has expressed displeasure at the fact that the International Trade Centre (ITC) at Longwa, Mon, lies in a dilapidated condition with “almost abandoned infrastructure” that has been occupied by “domesticated animals” for shelter.
Acharya visited the ITC at Longwa on October 28 while on his way to inaugurate the Chief Angh’s residence and tourist guest house. He was accompanied by local MLA Phowang who was asked for an explanation on the condition of the ITC.
According to a press release from PRO to the Governor, the MLA stated that despite “many attempts” through the elected representatives as well as the people of the area concerned, no headway was made on its development due to the “lackadaisical response” from both the State and Central governments. The ITC at Longwa was established in 1996, and inaugurated in 2006 in order to facilitate border trade with neighboring Myanmar. In 2016, it still remains on crutches.
The Governor Nagaland urged for the MLA and the public of the area to “seriously” pursue the resumption of the Centre “as any trade centre should have a brisk activities and these ITCs should be no less as it will benefit people residing in the border area of India and Myanmar.” Further, the Governor also “boosted the morale” of the Indian armed forces by visiting Delta Company of 35 Assam Rifles and having an interaction with them. While acknowledging the work of the armed forces in the border region, Acharya urged them to initiate public welfare schemes under army projects to “benefit the people of the border area.”
