Nagaland Governor K. Sankaranarayanan today stressed on the need to have job oriented and professional education. “The prime objective of any educational system is to ensure that the students are given the right skills and knowledge to enable them to take the jobs that exist in the society,” the Governor said while inaugurating Model Christian College here at Lower A.G Colony this morning. The educational system has to produce workers for the jobs that actually exist in the society, he said.
In order to ensure this, he said, one needs to emphasize on the need of professional education amongst students and schools. “Professional education implies faculties of engineering, medicine, management, computers, accountancy etc. etc broadly and these days there are specific courses that train and educate students for very specific jobs,” he said. Expressing happiness that Nagaland University was planning to launch an engineering college within this month, the Governor hoped that students will take benefit from the courses being started.
Sankaranarayanan also said that the service sector particularly relating to hospitality, travel, aviation, nursing, paramedics are sectors that create employment for students. “Colleges like Model Christian College can think of introducing such courses for the benefit of the students,” he observed. The Governor maintained that education plays a very vital role in the society as it grooms the citizen of tomorrow.
“The present day world with an increased role of science and technology in all walks of life presents a situation that is challenging on one hand and also presents a unique opportunity for the students to benefit from learning science adapting to technology,” he said. The Governor also pointed out that the science students must learn how they can contribute to the society by acquiring the right knowledge and learning the skills required to do meaningful things.
“For any student, if he has the three elements of knowledge, skills and attitude, he has the potential of not only getting himself gainfully employed but also of proving to be an enlightened citizen,” he said. The Governor also conveyed to the faculty members and staff of Model Christian College that they must also continue their untiring efforts in order to improve the quality of education in the college.
“This college has achieved good results in NBSE but now that you are affiliated to Nagaland University for your degree course, you must ensure that the tradition continues and we all will look forward to producing students who are not only good in academics but are also role models for the youth of today,” he said.
Stating that the Model Christian College had earned laurels in the field of school education and with the introduction of degree courses like B.Sc, he was hopeful that it has the potential to transform itself into being amongst the best institutions in Nagaland.
The motto of the college- “Academic & Moral Excellence” speaks for itself as to the virtues that are desirable amongst students, he said adding that the students must always strive hard in the pursuit of knowledge and excel in academics and at the same time have the right values and ethics so that they excel in the moral field also.
The teachers of Model Christian College have the challenge of integrating Christian values and philosophy with model education, Sankaranarayanan said. Prof. K. Kannan, vice chancellor, Nagaland University also spoke at the occasion.
Earlier, the function was chaired by principal-in- charge Dr. Longshibemo Yanthan while SP Francis, presidentof the college’s Board of Governors welcomed the gathering. Rev. K. Koda, Pastor of Mao Baptist Church said a prayer while Anthony Richa offered the vote of thanks. Solo, dance, choreography also marked the programme.
