Nagaland’s Governor Nikhil Kumar today drew attention of members of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly to observe Earth Hour on March 23 and to voluntarily switch off non-essential lights for one hour from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM as a mark of its solidarity and to create public awareness among the people.

In his address at the first session of the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly here today, Kumar said that in today’s world, sustainability of development is the need of the hour, as natural resources are depleting fast and “ we need to have due concern for climate change and global warming.”

Touching on power sector, Governor said the State is deficient in power production for which it depended on power supply from outside the state to meet bulk of its requirement. In this respect, he said several initiatives for improvement in the transmission and distribution of electricity are being taken up by the government, including unbundling of generation, transmission and distribution.

He said one megawatt capacity Hydel project at Lang is nearing completion. “While large hydro electric projects at Dikhu and Tizu-Zunki rivers are in the planning stage, the main obstacle is the land owner’s issue,” the Governor said.

Efforts are also being made to augment power supply from the new projects coming up in other parts of the north east, such as Subansiri Hydel project in Arunachal Pradesh and the Palatana Thermal Project in Tripura, he said adding that several initiatives are being taken in the New & Renewable Energy sector to augment power availability.
