Governor wishes for a ‘new generation of leaders’

MOKOKCHUNG, JUNE 28 (MExN): Nagaland Governor K Sankaranarayanan today unveiled a monolith signifying 50 golden years of Mokokchung’s existence as a district. On his first official visit to the district, where he was accorded a warm welcome, the Governor was all praises for its people. “Mokokchung can easily become the foremost district in the state in terms of quality of life, by increasing its commerce and income levels.”

He described himself in the past as a “hardcore politician” and added that it is his conviction to help the Government, which in turn means helping the people since he assumed office.

The Governor disclosed that the Center’s Look East Policy has earmarked Rs.50,000 crores for development of roads in the Northeast India, and added that “development should be, and is, the main object of Look East Policy,” hinting that there is scope for Mokokchung’s road connectivity with the rest of the state and country.

He made mention of luminaries and eminent political leaders from Mokokchung who “have played a prominent role.” “These efforts of your great leaders were made in the face of grave risk to life. This shows their abiding faith in peace and their vision of Nagaland as a progressive state of the country.”

Commending its denizens for not only leading Nagaland with a literacy rate of 84.27% but for targeting an achievement of 100%, Sankaranarayanan also lauded the district for having the lowest deprivation status among the poor.

The first administrative center of the state was opened at Mokokchung in 1889. Mokokchung became a district in 1957 within the enlarged entity called the Naga Hills Tuensang Area. “It has been a long journey studded with many important milestones.”

Deputy Commissioner of the district, Abhishek Singh, highlighted the plans and policies the District Planning and Development Board had formulated. The major projects would include transforming the Mokokchung-Mariani border road into a two-lane highway, construction of an intra-state Mokokchung-Dimapur highway, establishing professional educational institutions to make the district the educational hub of the state, to organize Naga Idol and a state-wide Motor Rally coinciding with the M Fest to be held under the theme “Visit Mokokchung,” among others.

Leader of Opposition I Imkong challenged the people of Mokokchung not to bask in the achievements of the past, but to keep striving and working for a vibrant future. He also wished for a “new generation of leadership in all fields.”

Education Minister L Imchen described Mokokchung a “nodal district.”  The minister also acknowledged the “multitudes of the people of Mokokchung as the district heads for a big successful Golden Jubilee.” He also solicited the people of the district and beyond to extend their best contribution towards the development of the district.
