Govt announces aid for landslide-affected

Dimapur, August 3 (MExN): The Government of Nagaland has announced that ‘aid relief’ and assistance would be given to families affected by the recent spate of landslides across the State. Reports of damage and destruction of habited areas and major roadways in Mon and Longleng district continues to come in. 

A recent case of destruction from the monsoon being reported is that of the Changtongya-Longleng road which is said to have been left unusable and dangerous after the rains came. The people of the two regions who use the stretch to commute are said to be facing extreme hardships, according to a local students’ organization.   

The government has directed all deputy commissioners and chairpersons of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMAs) to submit damage assessment reports at the earliest. To provide immediate relief to affected families, all the DDMAs have been provided with emergency fund, the government informed today through Home Commissioner J Alam IAS.

The Nagaland State Management Authority (NSDMA) has been receiving reports through various channels about the landslides occurring in various parts of the State because of incessant rains over the past few days and the damage caused. 

The NSDMA has asked all the deputy commissioners and chairpersons of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMAs) to submit detailed damage assessment reports at the earliest for necessary mitigation measures. To provide immediate relief to affected families, all the DDMAs have been provided with emergency fund, a note issued by Home Commissioner J Alam IAS informed today.

The government informed that the NSDMA, in collaboration with DDMAs, has been proactively working to respond to any natural calamity or disaster. A close watch is being kept on landslide-related disasters in this rainy season, the government said. The deputy commissioners are being directed to coordinate with the agencies in concern for immediate restoration of road communication wherever it is reported to have been effected by the heavy rains.

The monsoon brought with it heavy rainfall in some parts of the State. The Longleng-Changtongya road is said to have been heavily affected. The Phom Students Conference issued a press release today seeking the help of the government in mitigating sinking areas of road under Changtongya. The Nagaland Public works Department is appealed to, by the students’ organization to expedite diversion of the road at the earliest as the said Longleng-Changtongy has been left unusable and dangerous after a recent downpour.
