Kohima, July 7 (DIPR): Minister for Local Self-Government Dr. Shürhozelie today said that the state government has not authorized any municipal council or town council to levy toll taxes on the state’s roads and national highways. This was stated on the floor of the house during the fourth assembly session on July 7. The minister was replying to a query from MLA Tokheho. Shürhozelie clarified that municipal and town councils have been accorded the power to levy various taxes, but only with prior sanction from the state government, under Section 120 and 175 of the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001. On being queried further by MLA Tokheho and MLA KL Chishi about the incidences of toll taxes being levied at certain places, both the chief minister and minister Shürhozelie assured that the ‘lapses’ would be addressed and resolved with the municipal and town councils.
