Nagaland Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio today said that the State Government already has guidelines regarding the upgradation, merger and rationalisation of schools.
Replying to a supplementary question raised by MLA Nuklutoshi on the floor of the house during the ongoing 8th session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly in Kohima on March 10, the CM said, the provisions of the Right to Education (RTE) Act stipulate that a primary school should be available within a walking distance of one kilometre, and an upper primary school within three kilometres of a neighbourhood.
The CM highlighted the importance of conducting an updated census to ensure accurate data for planning and policy implementation.
Earlier, sharing his observations, MLA Nuklutoshi stated that in some areas multiple government and private schools have been established within short distances, which in certain cases has resulted in fewer students and comparatively more teachers. He suggested that, in consultation with local citizens and stakeholders, the government may consider merging Government schools or closing institutions that are non-functional or have no enrolment.
