Govt hints at reverting Saturday holiday decision

DIMAPUR, FEB 21 (DIPR/MExN): If the trend of poor attendance in Nagaland government offices continues, the government may roll back to the earlier system of observing only second and fourth Saturdays as holidays.
Expressing regret and displeasure over poor attendance despite the government declaring all Saturdays as holidays earlier, Chief Secretary P Talitemjen Ao yesterday said the lackadaisical attitudes on the part of the Government employees in attending office has resulted in hampering official works in the interest of the public. He was speaking during the monthly meeting of administrative heads and heads of departments at the Secretariat Conference Hall in Kohima.

The Chief Secretary said that much to the embarrassment of the Government, the declaration of all Saturdays as holidays has resulted in adverse feedback from the public. He felt that by declaring all Saturdays as holidays, officers and staff should have been honest to their work but that this is not so and called upon the officers to find ways and means to improve the attendance of officers and staff in their respective offices.

In a poll earlier conducted by The Morung Express, a person who had voted against the government decision had said, “Naga elders are still quite rigid with their grip on the sharing of traditional space. The fear of the unknown plus their comforts with the status quo have restricted them to move out from their comfort arena.”

Agreeing with the government directive, another voter had opined, “Basically Nagaland is a state that has no infrastructure to improve your skills, only few departments are sincerely working manually, so having a Saturday as weekend holidays will not made much difference, let employees come on working days regularly, till than let the departments get a new organized system for work.”
