HOURS BEFORE a crucial Cabinet meeting Nagaland Minister for Higher Education Dr Shurhozelie Liezietsu, taking serious view at the ongoing fracas between the Nagaland University Teachers Association (NUTA) and Professor GD Sharma, Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University (NU), has expressed willingness to investigate into the allegations of fund-embezzlement and other mismanagement against the VC, if a formal request for an investigating/enquiry commission is forwarded to the State Government.

Acknowledging that although the NU is an autonomous body, for which only the University Grants Commission (UGC) was statutorily the competent entity to investigate discrepancies and irregularities in State Universities Dr Shurhozelie said that if the State Government is approached for deputing an enquiry commission, the matter may be taken up.

“If the allegations are substantiated with necessary proof, the government can look into it to ascertain allegations of any misappropriation as such” Dr Shurhozelie said while pointing out that the government was also much concerned at the conflict between the VC and the NUTA.

In a correlated matter, the Higher Education Minister expressing serious concern that the careers of NU students were being compromised, following the ongoing impasse between the Lumami land donors and NU, has also called upon both contending sides to desist from ‘shifting’ responsibilities and blame on each other and instead, hammer out the issue on the negotiating table. “When the situation crosses the limits and a situation of this nature is created we cannot create a centre of excellence. We should be more reasonable” Dr Shurhozelie said while assuring that the government was able to cooperate on the matter. “It is for the Government, the landowners and NU to agree upon a condition to look at the future of the students and share equal responsibility. What logic is there in serving ultimatums to each other without coming to the negotiating table?” he asked.

He called upon for a quick resolution to the present taxing issues taking into consideration that the students were the worst effected.
