Govt sniff bad nose at Nagas’ cleanliness sense

Dimapur, Nov 1 (MExN): Observing strongly that “hygienic sense is lacking everywhere” in the state and the rampant careless disposal of wastes are “an uncomfortable scene”, the Government of Nagaland, with an eye on the coming festive season has called for a  cleanliness drive all over the state on November 8.

“It is felt necessary to undertake a cleanliness drive all over the state. Filth and dirt have accumulated all over. Blockage of drainage and accumulation of garbage along roadside is an uncomfortable scene and lot of inconvenience to pedestrians and vehicular traffic is experienced even leading to incidents. Moreover hygienic sense is lacking everywhere” a notification from V Sakhrie, Commissioner and Secretary to Chief Minister, observed. Tourist season has already set in ad the flow of tourists to the state is also increasing coinciding with the Christmas season and the Hornbill festival. Therefore, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has directed that a cleanliness drive on November 8 be carried out with the participation of all administration, police, BRO, municipality, town council, NGOs, various organizations and other agencies including inhabitants of respective areas and colonies. The Chief Minister also directed that the Chief Secretary issue necessary directives to all Deputy Commissioners to mobilize all concerned for the drive and that special attention be given to important towns.

According to the notification, Rio observed that the road divider from Tragopan Junction to City Tower Kohima, Dimapur, ‘is in a very shabby stage and required to be maintained properly while flowerbeds along the divider should be given adequate attention “with even-distribution of earth and manure.” Maintenance of flowerbeds along road dividers in the town could be entrusted to some clubs or organization as in the case of Classic Point at Kohima, the government observed.

The government also observed that one of the reasons for damage of road and “uncomfortable look of the road” is due to shortage of various construction materials along roadsides. “No construction materials be allowed to be kept on the roadside beyond a certain period of time and the owners be asked to clean the place properly on removal of such material” the notification stated.

It also observed that the beauty of the town and other important and attractive places are “disfigured” due to unfinished and prolonged building constructions as well as improper maintenance of existing buildings like timely painting, white washing, repairs etc as well as illegal constructions.

“To make a point, NH 39 starting from below the NHK crossing TCP gate, as the first entry to the capital city for any tourist, reflects a very shabby look giving bad impression to outsiders which must be rectified. Another observation is that while constructions of buildings are carried out, no safety measures or aesthetic aspect is taken care of. Appropriate notifications are therefore required to be issued immediately inviting attention of all concerned on these for strict compliance” the notifications stated.
