GPS Jotsoma Upper celebrates 125 yrs journey

The Government Primary School, Jotsoma Upper celebrated 125 years of existence on October 31 at Jotsoma Village Council Hall, Jotsoma in Kohima district.

Among the many distinguished alumni of the school included; TN Angami (first Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, and the second Chief Minister of Nagaland),  Kiyaneilie Peseyie (Speaker, Nagaland Legislative Assembly 2003- 2017), Vikobinyii Peseyie (Commandant, NAP), Mhalie Peseyie (Field Director ABCC and elected to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly in 1974).

Marking the occasion, 125 Years Monolith was unveiled by Vikhweno Chale, Additional Secretary, School Education, Government of Nagaland.

Addressing the gathering, Chale said that GPS Jotsoma Upper, established before the statehood in 1900 was an indication of the significant role played by the visionary pioneers, dedicated teachers, responsible community leaders in the growth and development of the school, instilling continuous education and knowledge.

Describing 125 years celebration as a remarkable achievement, she said “We need to carry the legacy and make this school- Learning of Excellence.”

She said that National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, emphasises quality education, consisting different methods of teaching and learning, skill development, competency- based, activity based, logical thinking etc.

It also focuses on behaviour and values of life, she added.

Stating that primary school is the foundation of learning, Chale said “Over 85% of a child’s brain development occur prior to the age of six. Therefore, appropriate care is crucial to ensure healthy brain development.”

Acknowledging the teachers for their committed services, she urged upon them to avail the teachers training opportunity.

Stating that the government use to invest heavily in providing free education to children, she stressed on the need to produce a fruitful result out of it.

Later, Chale also released 125 years souvenir of the GPS Jotsoma Upper.

Earlier, the monolith unveiling ceremony was led by Kevi Gwirie, Pastor CRC Jotsoma, with an invocation by Rev. Zakiebinyü Peseyie of Baptist Church Jotsoma and short address from Rüdolie Nagi, Chairman, Jotsoma Village Council.

The main celebration programme was led by Khriebu Nakhro, Convener, Organizing Committee and compered by Rokozono Nagi and Er Kevingukho Suokhrie. Seyielebi Senotsu, Catechist,Catholic Church Jotsoma invoked God’s blessings while welcome address was delivered by Vizakietuo Nagi, Teacher-in-Charge, GPS Jotsoma Upper.

Rokoselie Nakhro, President, Jotsoma Students’ Union shared greetings. A special number was presented by Kedovito Peseyie while students of GPS Jotsoma Upper, Staff and Organizing Committee also performed at the programme. Vote of thanks was pronounced by Bisevi Nakhro, Member, Souvenir Committee.
