‘Greening Asetkong’ turns one

Mokokchung, July 27 (MExN): Greening Asetkong – a five year project towards a greener society and preserving the biodiversity – completed its one year anniversary. To mark the occasion, the Asetkong Kaketshir Telongjem Mungdang (AKTM) planted exotic trees in Asetkong range on July 26.

Launched in July 26, 2016 by NLA Speaker Dr Imtiwapang, with support from AKTM, the Greening Asetkong project is aimed at enhancing the green cover and beautifying the landscape of Asetkong range and making the range into a “pollution free zone” and “natural carbon free zone”. Following the launch of the project, 2000 saplings were planted as part of the first phase, a press release from the AKTM informed.

To realize the dream, AKTM will grow various kinds of trees, including fruit bearing trees, superior ornamental trees and evergreen trees along the Asetkong-Tsusangra Road (AT-Road) and other village approach roads.

To mark the one year anniversary, AKTM with the theme, “A tree for peace” planted 500 saplings of Pine and Silver Oak covering a stretch of more than 30 km along the AT-Road. Volunteers also replaced the saplings which did not survive and erected bamboo barricades around the planted trees.

During a brief programme at Kobulong, AKTM President Alapong Jamir urged the students to not only plant trees and mark the occasion but to nurture it with care as their personal responsibility. He further added that a tree for peace is a lifelong journey and it must be taken one step at a time.
