DIMAPUR, MAY 11 (MExN): Mandarin is the main language of China and one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. With the phenomenal growth of the Asian giant as an economic and cultural superpower, learning the language holds promising career prospects. Keeping this in mind or rather taking advantage of this growing prospect, Chinese language has set foot in Naga soil courtesy a Chinese language institute in Dimapur.
Chinese Institute of Language & Arts and China Study Centre, offering courses in the learning and study of Mandarin will be launched here soon. The institute is the brainchild of Jenny Haining Murry, also the director. For the record, Murry has commendable experience in the teaching of Chinese language. She was long associated with the India China Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCCI) in Mumbai as an additional director, where she had also previously served as the head of the Chinese language department. Her position at the ICCCI and the fruition of the institute here was the end result of holding a prized degree in Chinese language. Jenny had obtained the degree from the Chinese Cultural University in Taipei, Taiwan.
The institute in Dimapur will be formally launched on May 14 while classes will begin from May 18. It is located at Vikiye Centre (Notun Basti junction), Circular Road.
Underlining her vision on the opening of the institute, Murry said that the institute was realized noting the growing economic ties between India and China. This has opened up numerous business and employment opportunities, said an optimistic Murry. “Learning the language will help create/get jobs”, she said while emphasising “having a Chinese language degree in your CV will boost your career opportunities.” “This is a huge opportunity… There is a huge opening for jobs. Our people should grab it.”
On the employment opportunities, provided the students learn well, it is myriad. The focus of the institute will be on assisting the students, who does well, get placements in China related companies. She said that many Indian companies having operations in China look for Chinese language employees while there are other avenues to work as teachers, translators and interpreters as well as guides for Chinese businessmen and tourists in India. Prior knowledge of mandarin for Indian medical students in China will come in handy, while saving a lot of time trying to grasp of the language after landing there. China being a manufacturing giant, it will be an added advantage for those who are in the import-export trade, she added. Further, she averred that compared to the mainland the people of the north east can easily catch up with the language owing to their Mongoloid lineage. Even the government is introducing Chinese language in the CBSE syllabus, she said. “There will arise the demand for Chinese language teachers”.
For the start, the institute is working on tying up with universities in China. It will not be long before native Chinese teachers start taking classes here, Murry said. Two courses – Certificate in Chinese Language & Culture and Diploma in Chinese language & Culture – are offered. The former, for beginners is for duration of three months and will deal with the basics while the latter, of ten months duration is an intensive one divided into three semesters. Murry added that the institute will come with a well stocked library-cum-China study centre, which will become functional by next month. It will be open to the public, albeit for a fee.
