Awareness campaign on GST programme was held at Conference Hall, Office of the Superintendent of Taxes, Mon organized by Commissioner of Taxes, Nagaland with Deputy Commissioner of Mon W. Honje Konyak as the guest of honour on May 12.

The DC Mon in speech said that the Goods and Services Tax will be a major improvement over the existing system and a significant step towards a comprehensive tax reform in the country. In this regard, Nagaland has been supporting this reform over the last few years and we were among the first few states to ratify the Constitutional Amendment Bill on August 26, 2016 which paved the way for the implementation of GST.

If implemented properly, GST will bring a number of benefits to the state of Nagaland. Traders and industry will have more working capital as seamless input tax credit for the tax paid on previous purchases will be available. He said that there will also be a benefit to consumers because of elimination of tax cascading, the production cost will fall and the prices in general are likely to fall. As a result, goods and services will be made available to the consumer at a cheaper price.

There is likely to be a Revenue gain for the State. This is very important since the state must find ways to increase its internal revenue generation which will boost the ability of the state to spend on developmental works.   GST will boost the overall efficiency of the tax system of the state. GST is a self-policing system of tax administration where every stage of transaction of the goods and services will be captured and tracked and a continuous chain of set-off from the original producer up to the retailer level will be established, he stated.

There are also challenges since the business community will have to align itself with the new system in order to keep up. Any new system is not easy to adopt but the state Government will rise up to the challenge in providing all necessary support to all the stakeholders in the days ahead. All officers and staff have been trained at various levels and are now competent to implement GST and also to provide the necessary assistance to the tax payers, he added. The DC requested the officer to be dedicated so as to implement GST practically and to educate the public to understand that tax need to be paid, through this GST.

Superintendent of Taxes, Dimapur Orenponi, who was the resource person, said that GST registration number can be obtained based on PAN numbers and for TDS detectors not having PAN, Tan-based registration is possible. Any or all types of entities carrying out supply of goods, services and both goods and service have to register.

Superintendent of Taxes, Dimapur Nitoli said that there is no limit on online payments where we will get instant uptakes, 100% secure transactions, payment receipt and can track status of your payment. GST payment modes have online payments such as credit/debit card and internet banking and other payment methods like over the counter and NEFT/RTGS.

All the business community head by Wanglung, president District chamber of commerce, Mon took part in the awareness campaign. Taushei Phom, Inspector of Taxes, Mon chaired the programme and Imosong Imsong, Deputy Commissioner of taxes, Dimapur zone delivered welcome address.
