A 9-yr-old child reportedly was subjected to severe physical abuse allegedly by her guardian on Sunday night in Wokha.

The accused guardian has been taken into custody for further interrogation, the district police confirmed.

According to Mhonchumi Humtsoe, Chairman of the Wokha Child Welfare Committee, the incident came to light after concerned citizens of Wokha informed the Committee at around 2:30 PM on Wednesday.

When the Committee responded, the child had already been rescued by her legal family the previous day.

Subsequently, the victim was taken for medical treatment at Civil Hospital, Wokha, and following a thorough examination, it was revealed that the child sustained severe injuries, including deep cuts, Humtsoe informed.

Additional information from the child victim regarding the incident could not be gathered as of now due to her mental trauma, she added.

Further, it was reported that the child had been subjected to abuse on other occasions as well, but Sunday's incident was particularly severe.

Accordingly, the victim sought refuge at a neighbour's house to call her father, leading to the family becoming aware of the incident, Humtsoe mentioned.

Meanwhile, Additional Superintendent of Police Wokha, Soriso K Quinker, informed that a First Information Report (FIR) was lodged by the victim's father around 3 PM on March 20, prompting ‘immediate action’ from the Police Department and Women Police Cell, Wokha.

Security personnel were dispatched to the site of the incident, and the accused has been taken into custody for further interrogation, the ASP added.
