Dimapur | December 18

Governor PB Acharya inaugurated Seluophe village as a model village under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) on December 18. Adopted by Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio as part of the SAGY mission objective, Seluophe village under Dhansiripar sub-division has become the second such village in Dimapur district to be adopted by MPs under the programme.

The programme was launched in October 2014 with focus on aiding the development of model villages through a collaborative implementation of existing governmental schemes and designing new initiatives based on the local needs. It entails the active participation of MPs, irrespective of party affiliation, with each MP adopting villages in their respective constituencies and mould plans as well as activating available resources to turn them into model villages. As per the programme plan, Rio adopted Seluophe. Longwa in Mon district is the other village adopted by the Lok Sabha member under the programme.

Governor Acharya, in his address, while highlighting the tenets of the SAGY, called for the development of India’s villages. Stating India has 6.6 lakh villages, he added that the impact the programme will have on the country will be immense if its aims are realised. The inaugural programme was hosted at the village’s newly constructed amphitheatre.

“Today at Seluophe, the amphitheatre is beautiful and I hope that the village becomes a model village from every angle,” said Acharya. He said that Nagaland with its thousands of college graduates and its rich soil has to move forward. Calling for the cultivation of a healthy work culture, he said that the people of the state must use the land towards self-sufficiency.

“Grow your own vegetables and market it properly, stand on your own legs and take Nagaland forward,” he said, while adding that the government is always there to assist. In this regard, he narrated of a visit to the Lumami campus, Nagaland University. He recalled that the University administration as well as the students brought to his attention the need for a “truck for the university so that they can go to Assam and purchase vegetables once a week.”

According to him, the acres of land at the University’s disposal can be put to good use instead of keeping it barren. Sharing his vision of development programmes reaching each and every village and strong village economies, he also reminded the residents of Seluophe to living up to the “model village tag” and ensuring the facilities that came with the adoption by the MP not going to waste.

Rio, in his address, said that the onus would be on the village to set an example for other villages to follow. He added that the respective government departments will be all too happy to help provided the villagers are cooperative and hard working.
