Greeting the people of the state on the occasion of the 44th anniversary of Nagaland’s statehood which falls on December 1, Governor Shankaranarayanan underscored the need for peace in the society and reminded that it will not come by unless the people rise above narrow sectarian interests and live in harmony with each other.
A speech of the governor on statehood day, which was made available here, Shankaranarayanan said that Nagaland state and Naga society, at present stands at the crossroads of development and prosperity. However, peace remains a much cherished goal and added that there is not a single individual in the state who does not want peace.
“Peace will not come by itself, for peace to come we have to ensure that we live in harmony with one another, have unity cutting across tribes and communities and rise above narrow sectarian interests to take a view that is beneficial for the society,” said the governor.
In this regard, Shankaranarayanan said that the cause for a better future for the youth is reason enough for all leaders to come together and join hands to foster the spirit of unity and brotherhood. “It will lead to better cohesion and harmony in society leading to peace, thereby creating an environment for rapid growth and economic development,” the governor.
Highlighting his views on achieving development and economic growth in the state, Shankaranarayanan underscored the need for focus on increasing yield and productivity of agriculture, diversification into horticulture crops, floriculture and increase in production of milk and meat which according to the governor, would augment the income of farmers. Infrastructure, especially roads, bridges and water supply need to be strengthened. Besides, he emphasized on the need for introduction of quality education and focusing on professional education to create employment for youths, since they are in strength in Nagaland.
“Use of technology will help bridge the remoteness of the state and help get benefits of the IT revolution. Small and medium business, especially in the services sector can create employment opportunities. Banking, insurance and financial services are the future growth areas,” he said.
However, the governor said that all this requires a firm commitment to resolve all differences and join hands for economic development. “With the strong community Institutions and the spirit of working together, I see hope in future. I am confident that together we will overcome all obstacles and realize the vision of a vibrant, economically strong Nagaland that the founding fathers of the State had dreamed of,” opined the Governor.
