Public Health Engineering Department (U) Kohima observed the Global Handwashing Day on October 15 and also conducted training on the role of Swachhagrahis & WATSAN committee members at its conference Hall, Urban Div PHED, Kohima.
Resource person Thenusuo Sekhose, HRD Consultant WSSO, PHED said that the role of Swachhagrahis and WATSAN is to sustain the Open Defecation Free status, reinforce improved behaviours through door to door communication, menstrual hygiene management, support ODF verification and also create awareness of operation and maintenance of toilets.
She said that Global Handwashing Day is an annual global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an easy, effective, and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by Abinuo Peki, SDO PHED and invocation was pronounced by Shosahye Keretsü, Sanitation Committee Member, Kohima Village While on “capacity building on ODF sustainability for rural bodies” Sekhose, HRD Consultant PHED, highlighted the impact of SBM programme and that access to sanitation has grown enormously in India from 39% to 93%.
She also said as Nagaland has become an ODF state, attention is now moving to sustainability initiatives for IEC, Capacity building and Swachhagrahis. Sustaining ODF status is at the core of the SBM therefore, the IHHL toilet constructed under SBM should continue to function, ensure continuous usage of toilets & practice of self hygiene behavior, Sekhose said.
