The Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench (GHCKB) on November 19 sought further clarification from the Nagaland Health & Family Welfare Department on why a Blood Bank has not yet been established in Longleng district, even as hearings continue in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning gaps in blood banking services across the State.

The division bench comprising Justice Michael Zothankhuma and Justice Yarenjungla Longkumer accordingly directed the counsel for the Health Department to obtain specific instructions on the pending issue and listed the matter for further hearing next week.

As per the Court’s record, the PIL was originally filed in 2021 seeking implementation of the National Blood Policy and related guidelines in Peren, Longleng, Kiphire and Noklak districts, along with directions for establishing more Blood Banks and strengthening existing facilities across Nagaland.

During the course of subsequent hearings, the Court has been informed of the establishment of various Blood Banks across the State.

Specifically, on September 3, 2025, the Court was informed that besides the newly established Blood Banks at Tuensang, Kiphire, Mon and Phek, existing Blood Centres were functioning at six other locations: Nagaland Hospital Authority Kohima; District Hospital Dimapur; Dr Imkongliba Memorial Hospital, Mokokchung; Christian Institute of Health Sciences & Research, Dimapur; 154 Army General Hospital, Jakhama; and 165 Army Hospital, Rangapahar.

The State also filed an affidavit stating that Blood Storage Centres are located at CHC Jalukie (Peren), CHC Medziphema (Chümoukedima), and the district hospitals of Mon, Wokha, Kiphire and Zunheboto.
