Mokokchung, October 29 (MExN): The three-day roll out cum orientation of school principals and head teachers, district programme officers and staffs of health and education departments in Mokokchung on Ayushman Bharat- School Health and Wellness Programme (AB-SHWP) commenced at Penli community hall, Mokokchung from October 28. 

The programme is a joint initiative between the Ministries of Health and Family Welfare and Department of School Education and Literacy (MOE) and Ministry of Human Resource and Development, stated a press release issued by District Programme Management Unit, NRHM, Mokokchung.

During her presentation, Dr Bilva Yalie, Medical officer, UPHC Siekhazou Kohima stated that the objectives and implementation of School Health and Wellness Programme (SHWP) is to increase knowledge and information about health and nutrition, indicates positive attitudes and enhance life skills to promote informed, responsible and healthy behavior among school going children. 

It also aims to creating the adolescent as agents of change or health messengers for spreading key health messages within the community. Establish robust linkages between schools and health and wellness centers (HWCs) and AFHCs to insure continuum of care between HWCs, higher facilities, schools and communities.

In this regard, she mentioned that the Principal and Head master, two Health and Wellness Ambassadors (HWAs)- Teachers and two Health and Wellness Messengers (HWMs)- students per institution in co-ordination with the AB-SHWP will play a vital role “to foster growth, development and educational achievement of school going children by promoting their health and wellbeing.”

The programme aims to sensitise parents on the needs of growing children, and thus, engaging the students and the institutions in “Eleven themes of curriculum”, namely- growing up healthy, emotional well-being and mental health, interpersonal relationships, values and responsible citizenship, nutrition and health, and sanitation, gender equality, prevention and management of substance misuse, promotion of healthy lifestyle, reproductive health and HIV prevention, promotion of safe use of internet or gadgets and media and safety and security against violence and injuries.

AB-SHWP will continue to train the HWAs and HWMs in a batch-wise training program at CMO conference hall and Penli community hall on October 29 and 30.
