For centuries men had their health concern unabated. All men covet a grand health. For people in Ukhrul Leishiphung Christian Hospital is one health institution that becomes the answer to their dilemmas. Ukhrul which has a population of approximately 1.4 lakhs with 250 villages and 5 blocks /sub-divisions has had only one hospital (District government hospital). The only standing hospital is poorly equipped and the patients which needs much attention are usually referred to the valley Hospitals giving a heavy jolt to the hill people in economic perspective as the majority mass are not financially well groomed. In psychological perspective there is always a sense of insecurity due to fear of encountering language barrier. Moreover the cultural difference also makes the communication gap wider in one sense.
But the people in Ukhrul town got a breather with the establishment of Leishiphung Christian Hospital. The Hospital is placed approximately 4 kilometers away southwards from the heart of the town. It was inaugurated on 6th march 1996 and came in full swing on March 2001. By then there were 3 Doctors and 12 working staffs. Leishiphung Christian Hospital is a true blessing for the people in its own ways. Four years apart, now there are 4 Doctors and 36 working staff inclusive of the administrative unit giving service to the people 24 x 7.
Within the periods of 2001 to 2005, 457 major and 906 minor operations have been performed. More than 617429 people have received care. Frequent visits of surgeons and doctors from the USA are an added advantage to the service of Leishiphung Hospital. Usually the visiting doctor’s from abroad perform complicated operations availing the people a chance to access the best services at the doorstep at the lowest cost. The recent departure of Dr. James Perry Fidler – Surgeon Cincinnati Endocrine, Director – Ohio Medical University and Dr. Marcus Dominic Jarboc, Endocrine Surgeon – Ohio medical university are such visits.
Another breakthrough of Leishiphung Christian Hospital in their service for the people will be the establishment of Leishiphung School of Nursing with a plan to accommodate 20 students/ academic year and which will be subsequently 60 students per academic year after the third year. Construction is on full swing to begin the session by 2006. In truest terms LCH is one institute that gives a sense of security to the people in need.
Another milestone contribution of LCH to the development of the people is the Daily operation of Leishiphung Ambulance Taxi Service which was an eye opener to the public to begin with the business of taxi service.
With no assistance from the government, the work of LCH is made a reality only through the constant support of the Founder President, Dr. Luithuk Zimik and his family. Apart from his constant contribution morally and financially to the Hospital, His deep devotion and concern for the welfare and success of the people are to be acknowledged. His Family and the entire institution will remain to be one biggest inspiration for the generation to come.
