‘Situation not as it was made out to be on social media’

There was a message circulating on social media, since April 19 evening, of the CIHSR, Dimapur, purportedly overwhelmed by COVID-19 cases.

While the part about the hospital having COVID-19 cases turned out to be true, sources in the CIHSR played it down stating that it should not be cause for panic. We have been having COVID-19 patients throughout the pandemic. It is nothing new for us,” a CIHSR official told The Morung Express today.

“Somebody got stressed out, maybe. Every person has different temperament. Some panic. Some face it coolly,” the official added, while stating that the CIHSR has three dedicated ICUs for COVID-19 cases and it would be wrong to assume it is overwhelmed “if three (COVID) patients get admitted”.

It was disclosed the CIHSR admitted COVID-19 cases on April 19 but did not specify how many. “There was a meeting today with the CMO (district Chief Medical Officer). All statistics will start coming.”

A government health official later confirmed that the CIHSR admitted two to the COVID-19 ICU and there were five others in the general ward without needing oxygen support.

“It is not what it was made out to be as circulated on social media,” the official asserted.

Hospitalization of COVID-19 cases or admissions to ICU was however not reflected in the daily COVID-19 bulletin released by the State Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme on April 20.

“The CMO (Dimapur) had a coordination meeting within them (CIHSR) today. I was told the CIHSR will start notifying COVID-19 cases to the CMO starting tomorrow (April 21),” the official informed.
