Wokha, June 18 (MExN): Unprecedented spell of heavy rainfall, particularly in the intervening night of June 17-18 has reportedly triggered widespread damages in Bhandari and Merapani and injured two persons.

As per the State DIPR, the heavy downpour has resulted in landslides and mud floods in and around Bhandari town under Wokha district.

While regular clearance and cleaning efforts were carried out in recent weeks by the public of Bhandari town as part of monsoon preparedness, they did not prove effective against the heavy rains, it said.

Some private buildings and properties were partly damaged due the torrential rain and landslides, it added, citing Additional Deputy Commissioner Bhandari.

The State DIPR, further quoting Sub-Divisional Police Officer Bhandari, reported that on June 18 morning, one pick-up vehicle  skidded off the road while trying to navigate a landslide area and fell about 100 feet below the road at Tsumang ward, towards Merapani from Bhandari.

The owner of the vehicle, his driver and one woman passenger sustained injuries and were shifted to Golaghat hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, as per the Merapani Village Council, heavy rainfall has caused flash floods in the village and its foothill areas.

Due to overflowing of the Marachu river, the main road of Merapani and the near-by areas were also  flooded  with water with water reportedly rising above than seven feet from the ground level in some areas.

The council also informed that the flood has caused damage of the main road by causing crack measuring about 30 feet and appealed to the concerned authorities to look into the matter to prevent further damage.

Meanwhile, ADC Bhandari hae urged the public to keep check on water logging and potential health hazards facilities to prevent outbreak of water-borne and vector-borne diseases, Malaria and other epidemics during the sub-tropical summer season.

The district administration stated that efforts are undertaken to clear, maintain and repair damaged roads, drainage systems and other local infrastructures to minimise the impact of monsoon-related issues, the State DIPR added.
