Heavy rains in Tura on Saturday and Sunday have resulted in several streams flowing at dangerous levels and reports of damages to road and property.

Rains lashed the region persistently throughout the last 24 hours with a let up only this afternoon.

Streams flowing through the town were all above danger levels and many places in Tura saw waters flowing at rapid speeds through the streets.

Places like Babupara Ghat, Gandrak Dare and Leper Colony saw huge flow of water rushing through due to the continuous heavy rains. While some roads have been damaged due to the deluge, the worst affected is the road near Chandmari playground, where tufts of tar have been washed away. Mudslides were also reported in several areas.

“Some roads have been damaged, as have some retaining walls and bridges in the Tura urban areas. Details are being sought from the PWD, Urban Affairs and BDOs on the extent of damage done. Disaster Management has already visited the sites to check if evacuation is necessary,” Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills, Ram Singh said on Sunday.
