Kohima, October 11 (DIPR): The Directorate of H&FW (Drugs Control) in a notification mentioned that Blood is a drug as defined under Section 3(b) of Drugs & Cosmetic Act, 1940, whereby, collection, processing, storage, epheresis and distribution of blood requires Blood Bank Licence under Section 18(c) read with Rules 122F of Drugs & Cosmetic Rules, 1945.
No hospitals, clinics or individuals shall collect, process, store or distribute blood without a valid licence. Failure to comply with this directive, prosecution shall be initiated against the defaulters under Section 27(b) (ii) of the said Act.However, they may procure blood from licensed blood bank for emergency blood transfusions as per the norms prescribed.
