
DIMAPUR, MAY 1 (MExN): Following the incident on April 28 in Kiphire, the IGAR (North) visited Kiphire on April 30 and has ordered a high level inquiry . A press note informed that the IGAR (North) was briefed about the incident and that he reviewed the security situation in Kiphire. The IGAR (N) has described the whole incident as “highly regrettable”.
The statement informed that investigations would primarily look into the “allegations of high handedness” by the Assam Rifles personnel deployed at Kiphire. It stated that the investigations will also look into the “alleged involvement of certain underground cadres who are reported to have instigated the crowds and actively participated in the riot and arson that followed.” The press note said, “There are reports that certain underground cadres had played an active role in precipitating the whole situation.” It further alleged that, “these cadres had allegedly mixed with the mobs and had indulged in firing onto the DC’s residence as well as the Assam Rifle post prior to setting the DC’s residence on fire.”
The note alleged that “The crowds had also indulged in the snatching of arms and ammunition belonging to a JCO of Assam Rifles who had sustained grievous injuries.” The note also clarified that the “police guard deployed at the DC’s residence and the Assam Rifles troops had to open fire in self defense.”
